Everybody Wins! Iowa Celebrates National Day of Service

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was declared a federal holiday and was first observed in 1986 to celebrate the birthday of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  In 1994, Congress proposed Martin Luther King Jr. Day become a national day of service in hopes of inspiring others to participate in service within their community, just as Martin Luther King, Jr. had done years before.

Everybody Wins! Iowa organized a book drive to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.   Under the leadership of Jena Weissenburger, this book drive collected a whopping 5,339 books which will be given to children in need here in central Iowa.

We would like to put a special spotlight on Sally Householder who worked with the Waukee schools to collect an astounding 3,282 books!  Sally explained how the students became truly inspired in this cause upon learning that the number of future prison beds is determined by 4th grade reading scores.   Everybody Wins! Iowa is thankful for the involvement of Waukee school students, and we believe Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would be proud to see inspired students making a difference in his memory.

Below are some Waukee High School Students that did their part! Click here for more photos!
